Crews respond to condo fire in North Druid Hills

ATLANTA, Ga. (Atlanta News First) - DeKalb County firefighters extinguished flames at the Briar Hills Condos in the 1100 block of Briarcliff Road in North Druid Hills on Wednesday.

Heavy smoke was seen pouring from the building shortly after noon, according to authorities.

“There was a loud boom. I heard people in the hallway talking about smoke filling their condo,” resident Matt Voigt said. “From experience, it smelled like an electrical fire. I know not to be around that smoke long so we just got as many people as fast as we could out of the building and then watched the rest happen.”

The fire reportedly started in the basement of the complex, damaging five units.

No injuries were reported, but at least one cat died in the fire.

“The snow that was on the ground from earlier hindered — or slowed down — some of our crews from getting here. But we were lucky to get 15 units on scene today,” Capt. Jaeson Daniels with DeKalb County Fire Rescue said.

“When you’re little and you learn about fires and fire drills and things like that, you never think it’s going to happen to you,” resident Nick Tigges said.
