Atlanta officer allegedly shot by security guard on Marietta Street
ATLANTA, Ga. (CBS46) - An Atlanta Police Department officer is recovering in the hospital after being shot while responding to a burglary on Marietta Street. After further investigation, police arrested a security guard in connection to the shooting.
Atlanta Police announced Thursday the arrest of 41-year-old Paul Augustin. He now faces a slew of charges including aggravated assault, possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony, and reckless conduct.
It happened just after 6 a.m. Thursday after police were called to reports of a burglary at an upscale men’s boutique called A Ma Maniere.
Police tell CBS46 that during the investigation, a shot was fired, striking one of the officers on the scene. Another officer applied a tourniquet, and a convoy of police vehicles escorted the injured officer, a 4-year veteran of the police department, to Grady Memorial Hospital.
“He is in good spirits but is certainly going to have to have some medical care today and the next few days to come,” Atlanta Police Assistant Chief Darin Schierbaum said.
Details surrounding the shooting or why the security reportedly fired at the officer remain limited. Police are investigating both the alleged burglary and the shooting on Marietta Street.
As for the burglary, it was not a surprise to those working at the Arden Garden smoothie shop next door.
“The first thing that came to mind was not again,” Employee Haniel Amoah said.
Last year, burglars busted through the front of the Arden Garden business in a U-Haul taking out the side wall to get into the boutique.
“It really baffled my mind,” Amoah said.
Augustin was transported to the Fulton County Jail. CBS46 has learned that Augustin owns a company called Alexandria Executive Protection and Security Service in Acworth.
