School employee arrested in Union County school shooting incident

BLAIRSVILLE, Ga. (CBS46) - The first day of school was canceled Friday for students and staff in Union County after an “isolated shooting incident” at Union County Primary School.

The incident happened around 2:15 p.m. Thursday outside of the school. The Georgia Bureau of Investigation said someone targeted a specific unoccupied vehicle in the parking lot of the school. No one was injured and a school employee was taken into custody.

Friday morning, the GBI announced that authorities arrested Dwight Anthony Brown, 64, of Blairsville, just before 3 p.m. Thursday.

Brown is charged with three counts of aggravated assault in connection to the shooting incident. Authorities said Brown was a maintenance employee for the Union County School System.

School was not in session at the time of the shooting; however, teacher planning was taking place in the school building.

Schools officials sent out the following statement regarding the incident:

Brown is currently in the Union County Detention Center.

The GBI continues to investigate.
