GBI: Suspect killed in shooting involving officer in Cobb County drug investigation identified

ATLANTA, Ga. (Atlanta News First) - A suspect who was shot and killed in a shooting involving law enforcement in a drug investigation on Wednesday, according to the Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI).

The incident happened in the area of Windy Hill Road and South Cobb Drive.

Cobb County police said the suspect was shot during a traffic stop, which happened around 5:30 p.m. The Marietta Cobb Smyrna Organized Crime Unit was investigating the vehicle and the driver for drug activity, they said. The suspect was later identified as Peter Luna-Lopez, 26, according to the GBI.

The GBI said the Luna-Lopez tried to get away and a police officer tried to force him off the road with their patrol car. During the incident, shots were fired into the vehicle, killing him, according to the GBI. The GBI said the suspect was found with a handgun.

No officers were shot or seriously injured in the incident, police said.

One witness told Atlanta News First they heard about 15 rounds being fired.

The GBI said this marks the 91st shooting involving law enforcement they have been asked to investigate this year.

The GBI will conduct an independent investigation and once done, it will be turned over to the Cobb County District Attorney’s Office.
