2 people in custody, 1 on the run after car chase on I-20, Conyers police say

ATLANTA, Ga. (Atlanta News First) — Two people were taken into custody early Tuesday and one remains at large after a brief chase in connection with a series of vehicle break-ins, Conyers police said.

The ordeal began just after 3 a.m. when officers responded to a car break-in at the Comfort Inn on Klondike Road, police said.

The suspects took off in a vehicle, and a brief car chase ensued, which ended when the officer executed a PIT maneuver.

All three suspects jumped out of the vehicle and fled, Conyers police. Two of them were caught, but one remains at large.

Officers say the suspects may be linked to at least 12 car break-ins at three hotels in the area.

Tim Whitten, whose truck was broken into, said nothing was taken from his vehicle.

“All my toolboxes are locked up. They couldn’t get anything inside there. I don’t leave nothing important inside my cab,” Whitten said.

Whitten said the break-in still created problems for his workday.

“Now I have to ride around all day with the heat. I guess it is what it is,” he said.

This is an ongoing investigation, police said.

The aftermath of the PIT maneuver briefly shut down traffic for early commuters as it left a damaged police cruiser and white sedan on the shoulder of I-20 westbound near Panola Road.
