Cobb County School Board ignores parents’ safety concerns following Sprayberry High School stabbing
ATLANTA, Ga. (Atlanta News First) -The Cobb County School Board did not address parents’ questions and concerns about school safety at Thursday’s school board meeting the day after a stabbing at Sprayberry High School.
“Recently, you have McEachern, Sprayberry, these other incidents occurring, and they don’t want to speak to them,” said Andrew Cole, a Cobb County parent.
“Last month, a student asked for accountability following a school shooting. The superintendent would only refer to that shooting as an event, my son went to an event last month. It was a school play, school shootings are not events,” said a father during public comment.
The school board’s 93 page agenda had no items regarding safety enhancements to schools.
“It’s indicative of a reoccurring theme with some of the board members and the superintendent, unfortunately. They don’t want to speak to or elaborate on anything if it’s anything perceived as negative for the district,” said Cole.
Parents raised their concerns during public comment.
“When safety is involved, you know, parents are concerned, students are concerned, what are you doing to communicate with them, and let people know that you’re engaged, you’re trying to rectify things, and provide a safe environment,” said Cole.
The superintendent did not address any of the comments during his remarks later in the meeting. He has also not responded to Atlanta News First’s requests for interviews, nor have school board members.
A district spokesperson sent the following statement Friday morning:
“On Wednesday, a student, who is now in custody, used a knife to injure another student. The victim has been treated for their injuries and is recovering. The campus is secure and Sprayberry continues to be one of the best, safest places for students to learn.
