Father sentenced after 7-year-old son killed using unattended gun at DeKalb gas station, DA says

The shooting happened when the 7-year-old and his younger sibling found a loaded gun in the car they were left in.

ATLANTA, Ga. (Atlanta News First) - A man has been sentenced to 10 years after his son was shot using his unattended gun, according to the DeKalb County District Attorney.

Police said Dante Daugherty went to a gas station in Lithonia with his two sons on Sept. 4, 2023.

According to arrest warrants, Daugherty left his sons inside the car with a loaded gun. That’s when one brother found the gun and shot 7-year-old Zayre in the head.

Daugherty plead guilty to second-degree murder and two counts of second-degree cruelty to children.

He has been sentenced to 10 years, serving two with the rest on probation.
