Cobb County School District threatens to punish students who walk out in upcoming ICE protest
ATLANTA, Ga. (Atlanta News First) — Cobb County School District officials are warning students against a planned walkout protesting ICE this Friday.
In a message on its website, the district said “external groups” are trying to recruit students for a rally.
“While we respect the right of students to express their views in a non-disruptive way, students are expected to be in class and engaged in learning throughout the school day,” the statement said.
Anyone who walks out of or skips class will face consequences, the district continued — including out-of-school suspension and the potential loss of parking, sports participation and extracurricular activities.
“Each has long-lasting impacts that could be taken into account by college admission offices and future employers,” the district said. “We encourage families to speak with their children about appropriate civic engagement and the importance of not disrupting school.”
The school sent a similar message in September 2024 regarding a planned gun control rally in the wake of the deadly Apalachee High School shooting.
