Financial planners aren’t just for the wealthy, expert says

(InvestigateTV) — You don’t have to be rich to get real financial advice.

Certified financial planners can help people organize their finances and stay on track, especially during major life changes.

Karla Salinas, vice president of financial planning at BOK Financial, said people often think they need a certain net worth to work with a financial planner. But it’s really about whether you’re going through any major milestones in life.

“Are your finances getting more complicated? Do I understand my financial picture today? And, you know, if you’re starting to ask yourself, where do I want to be in 20 or 30 years, that’s a good time to get organized and work with a financial planner,” Salinas said. “A plan can help organize your finances so they can get you to your goals.”

She said sometimes it’s as simple as needing someone to outline those goals.

People who recently got married, had kids or bought a home may need extra help getting organized.

Salinas said you can go to a local bank or credit union that may offer a financial planning service. You can also search online for a certified financial planner.

Financial planners charge in different ways. Depending on how much in investments or cash you have under their platform, they can waive the financial planning fee or discount services based on how many assets are under their management, Salinas said.

Or they could charge a flat fee for financial planning. That fee will include meetings and usually a written report of your detailed financial plan.
