ATLANTA, Ga. (Atlanta News First) — The City of Mableton is moving to create its own public safety division, including its own law enforcement.

Cobb County police served the city, but the contract allowing them to do so expired on Sunday.

Mableton leaders wanted a new, long-term deal but said negotiations ended with the county only agreeing to a one-year police services contract.

City leaders said establishing its own public safety department will save money and give residents more control and stability. The city will lay out its plan and take questions at a public safety town hall on June 15.

In the meantime, the Cobb County Sheriff deputized Cobb police officers so they can still respond to calls in Mableton.
