UGA baseball wins Game 1 slugfest over Mississippi State

ATLANTA, Ga. (Atlanta News First) — Georgia is one win away from punching its ticket to the Men’s College World Series after surviving a dramatic 13-12 comeback victory over Mississippi State in Game 1 of the NCAA Super Regional at Foley Field.

The Bulldogs found themselves in an early hole, trailing 7-0 before erupting for five runs in the fourth inning. Daniel Jackson and Rylan Lugo sparked the rally with back-to-back home runs, while Michael O’Shaughnessy added a two-run blast down the right-field line that chased Mississippi State starter Tomas Valincius from the game.

With suspended third baseman Tre Phelps unavailable, O’Shaughnessy stepped into the spotlight. He finished with two home runs, including a towering three-run shot off the scoreboard in right field in the bottom of the eighth inning that proved to be the difference.

In a game defined by offense, the two teams combined for 11 home runs as Georgia held off a late Mississippi State push to secure the wild 13-12 win.

Game 2 of the Super Regional is set for Sunday at noon ET, with Georgia needing just one more victory to advance to Omaha and the Men’s College World Series.
