ATLANTA, Ga. (Atlanta News First) — Atlanta Falcons and Atlanta United owner Arthur Blank praised Atlanta’s World Cup showing Wednesday as the city hosted its final match of the tournament: a semifinal between England and Argentina at Atlanta Stadium.

Argentina came from behind late to defeat England 2-1 and will play Spain in the World Cup final, closing out Atlanta’s run as a host city.

“I think this has been an incredible experience for Atlanta,” Blank said. “We’ve done an incredible job here in the stadium. Out of the 16 stadiums across North America, we’re ranked No. 1, which is great. I think Atlanta itself — our mayor, our governor, everything surrounding it, Centennial Park, Fan Fest — they’ve all had a great, unbelievable time.”

Blank said the most meaningful part of the tournament was seeing fans connect through the sport.

“The thing that was most meaningful to me was that we really had an opportunity to build great personal experiences for everybody in this building,” Blank said. “Their hearts, minds, human connection to each other, themselves. That’s a beautiful thing for people.”

Wednesday’s semifinal marked Atlanta’s biggest match of the tournament and its final World Cup game this year. The tournament brought international fans to the city, with visitors exploring local restaurants, exhibits and the FIFA Fan Festival.

Before the match, Blank said he had never heard Atlanta Stadium that loud.

“Every match is almost the same way,” Blank said. “It’s adrenaline, sharing of human emotion, human connection. It’s a beautiful thing to see. It’s what we all want in our lives every day. We have to find a way to create World Cup every day in our lives to bring that much joy to ourselves personally and everyone else we’re connected to.

“Atlanta’s done a great job of doing that. We’ve got to continue to do it, though.”
