3 charged after leading deputies on a pursuit reaching 120 mph, sheriff’s office says

SCOTT COUNTY, Tenn. (WVLT/Gray News) - Authorities in Tennessee say three people are facing charges after a police pursuit reached 120 mph.

According to the Scott County Sheriff’s Office, the situation started Wednesday evening near Oneida when deputies saw a car traveling at about 90 mph on Highway 27.

Authorities said when they tried to perform a traffic stop on the vehicle, it sped up to speeds of 120 mph.

The chase ended when the car ended up crashing on Highway 27, prompting the three people inside to run from the scene.

A woman, later identified as Hope Barnett, was the first suspect to be taken into custody on Wednesday night. Scott County authorities said she was charged with evading arrest and possession of drug paraphernalia.

The sheriff’s office said later that night it found the second suspect, identified as Jonathon Wood. He was arrested and charged with being a fugitive from justice, wanted out of Kentucky on first-degree assault and burglary charges.

The third suspect, River Humfleet, was located on Saturday morning in the Leatherwood community. Humfleet’s charges included evading arrest and theft of a motor vehicle. Additionally, he was also found to be a fugitive wanted out of Kentucky for assault, burglary and parole violation charges.

No injuries were reported.
