ATHENS, Ga. (Atlanta News First) — A specialized medical team, including surgeons and an anesthesiologist, was rushed to a construction site on the Athens Bypass Friday morning to help in a complex rescue operation.

The Athens-Clarke County Fire Department said it responded to the scene of a serious industrial accident near the Atlanta Highway intersection around 6:45 a.m. According to officials, a construction worker fell into a machine during a concrete-pouring operation and became entangled in it.

Rescue crews worked for over an hour to extricate the worker. Due to the severe injuries and the machine’s complexity, a trauma response team was requested from Piedmont Athens Regional Medical Center, consisting of surgeons, an anesthesiologist and multiple nurses.

The Athens-Clarke County Fire Department issued a statement thanking the medical staff for their immediate response and life-saving assistance during the rescue.

No details regarding the worker’s identity or current medical condition have been released. The cause of the accident is under investigation.
