Fog will slow your morning commute; how to stay safe on the roadways
First Alert Meteorologist Rodney Harris says the fog will likely stick around the metro through about 9 a.m.
ATLANTA, Ga. (Atlanta News First) - Low visibility due to foggy conditions will slow your morning commute, but there are several ways to stay on time and be safe while you navigate the roadways Wednesday morning.
According to the National Weather Service and State Farm Insurance, the first thing drivers should do is slow down and give themselves plenty of space between other vehicles on the road. Should you have to brake quickly, that’ll give you more space to slow down.
First Alert Meteorologist Rodney Harris says the fog will likely stick around the metro through about 9 a.m.
Here is a list of other safety tips for driving in foggy conditions.
1. Drive with low beams and/or fog lights: Never use your high-beam lights. Using high-beam lights causes glare, making it more difficult for you to see what’s ahead of you on the road.
2. Use roadside reflectors: The markings can help you navigate twists and turns.
3. Use the right edge of the road as a guide: This will help you stay in your lane and not “drift” into the middle lane.
4. Use windshield wipers and defrosters: These will help limit excess moisture on the window and reduce glare.
5. Make sure others can see you: Make your vehicle visible to others both ahead of you and behind you by using your low-beam headlights since this means your taillights will also be on. Use fog lights if you have them.
6. Turn off cruise control: This will maximize your control of your vehicle.
