A resident said she saw emergency crews arrive around 7 p.m., which is when Serita Whitney realized something serious was happening.

“We were so concerned,” Whitney said. “We were very nervous about what was going on in the building.”

After getting her baby to safety and confirming the incident was in a neighboring building within the complex, Whitney went to the roof to get a better look. She snapped a photo and said it appeared crews were drilling into concrete while smoke was visible.

She later saw firefighters climbing ladders onto the roof.

“They had a lot of hoses and firemen going around the building and closing off the streets,” Whitney said. “We were just trying to figure out what was going on. It’s scary. You know, nobody ever wants a fire in their home or to be in a position where they feel their home is in danger.”

Atlanta Fire has not yet said what happened or why crews were operating on the roof.
