78-year-old woman accused of leaving child, dog in hot car while she was inside Home Depot

HORRY COUNTY, S.C. (WMBF/Gray News) - A 78-year-old woman is accused of leaving a child and a dog inside a hot car in South Carolina.

The Horry County Police Department responded to a Home Depot on Saturday.

When police arrived, first responders removed a 9-year-old from the car and were treating her for possible heat exhaustion.

Officials said the child was drenched in sweat and appeared to have trouble breathing. Officials said she also tried to drink water but could not do so.

According to the police document, 30 minutes after treatment, the girl’s internal body temperature was 104 degrees.

June Cooper King was arrested and charged with unlawful conduct toward a child.

King told police she had left the 9-year-old and a dog in the car to go into the store and did not think the time she spent inside would cause any problems.

The victim was taken to the hospital for further treatment, and King’s husband took the dog.

King was taken to J. Reuben Long Detention Center before being released on a $25,000 bond Sunday.
