Funeral plans announced for Sen. Lindsey Graham
WASHINGTON (Gray DC) - The late Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.) will be honored with funeral services in both Washington, D.C., and his native South Carolina next week, according to plans released by his family.
The services will take place Tuesday, July 28, in Washington before moving to South Carolina on Wednesday, July 29. President Donald Trump is expected to deliver a tribute during the Washington service at the Washington National Cathedral.
Graham’s remains will first arrive at the U.S. Capitol on Tuesday morning. In recognition of his decades of service in the U.S. Air Force, an Armed Forces Body Bearer Team will carry his casket into the Capitol before a U.S. Capitol Police memorial guard takes over in honor of his Senate service.
A private ceremony will be held in the Capitol Rotunda and livestreamed for the public.
The funeral service at Washington National Cathedral will begin at 2 p.m. and will be invitation only. The Cathedral will livestream the service. Following the funeral, Graham’s remains will return to South Carolina.
On Wednesday, a public funeral procession will begin at the South Carolina State House in Columbia. The procession will include a South Carolina State Guard caisson, a tribute from law enforcement agencies across the state and an F-16 flyover by the 169th Fighter Wing from McEntire Joint National Guard Base before continuing to First Baptist Church of Columbia.
The church service will be open to the public on a first-come, first-served basis. A private family burial will follow in Pickens County.
In a statement, Sen. Darline Graham, who was appointed to fill the remainder of her brother’s terms, expressed gratitude to those coming together to honor the late senator.
“I would like to extend my sincere thanks to President Trump and his team, Washington National Cathedral, Senate leadership, First Baptist Church of Columbia and the Senate Sergeant at Arms for going above and beyond to ensure these will be honorable tributes to Lindsey,” she said.
