Former U.S. presidents among mourners at Jimmy Carter’s D.C. funeral
ATLANTA, Ga. (Atlanta News First) - Several prominent politicians were in the crowd at Jimmy Carter’s state funeral in Washington, D.C. on Thursday — including a host of former presidents.
Donald and Melania Trump, Barack Obama, Bill and Hillary Clinton and George W. and Laura Bush sat in one of the Washington National Cathedral’s frontmost rows. President Joe Biden and First Lady Jill Biden sat a row ahead of them, alongside Vice President Kamala Harris and First Gentleman Doug Emhoff.
Former Vice Presidents Al Gore, Mike Pence and Dan Quayle were also in attendance, as was Vice President-Elect J.D. Vance and his wife, Usha.
The funeral comes just 11 days before Trump is sworn in as the next president. Congress certified his win on Monday.
Thursday is the last day of Carter’s six-day state funeral. It’s also a national day of mourning, meaning post offices, U.S. stock markets and most federal offices are closed.
After the service, Carter’s remains will be flown back to Georgia. He will be buried in his hometown of Plains, Georgia, alongside Rosalynn, his wife of 77 years.
Carter died on Dec. 29, 2024, at the age of 100. He was the longest-living U.S. president.
