ATLANTA, Ga. (Atlanta News First) — Atlanta’s Dogwood Festival entered its third and final day Sunday with organizers expecting a robust crowd with beautiful weather and an increased police presence.

Some attendees said they felt reassured by an increased security following last weekend’s shooting during 404 Day festivities that killed 16-year-old Tianah Robinson.

“It’s nice and calm and the weather’s perfect for us to come out and see the beautiful artwork. I’ve been here a few times for the festival, never really felt uneasy,” said Angelique Walker, who has lived in Atlanta for 20 years. “But I know with things that are going on, it’s great to see them here.”

Atlanta Police Chief Darin Schierbaum said the department reviewed and strengthened its security plans for the festival in response to the shooting.

Dogwood Festival Executive Director Brian Hill said the event already had a police-approved safety plan in place, but staffing was increased after last weekend’s violence.

“We had a plan in place that has been approved by APD, and then what happened last weekend ended up having the chief of police augmenting what we already had,” Hill said.

Hill added that additional resources were deployed throughout the park and surrounding neighborhoods, along with a larger officer presence on festival grounds.

Artists and vendors said crowds remained steady and engaged as the festival continued.

“It’s been pretty good,” said Freddie Blache. “A lot of people are really receptive … and we try to have something for everybody.”

The 90th annual Dogwood Festival runs through Sunday, with both police and festival leaders expressing confidence that the weekend will conclude safely.

“It’s great to see them here, and it’s not overbearing where you feel like there’s a threat looming somewhere,” Walker said. “But you just kind of feel more safe walking around.”
